Pyrola minor Common Wintergreen

This is the only Wintergreen we have recorded in Lanarkshire.

All the leaves come from near the base and are rounded with rounded teeth. The periole is shorter than the leaf blade. When the orbicular flower open, the style (1-2mm) is contained with the flower, although it can emerge as the flower fades. The style is not widened immediately below the stigma. The flower shape and style differentiate it from the two other species that do occur elsewhere in Scotland. It is found in leaf-mould in woods, damp ledges and sometimes unexpectedly in urban areas.
